Price the table and each chair separately.
A set price can hide differences in top construction, wood species, chair joints and upholstery. Build the unit costs first, then multiply by the order quantities.
| Part | What to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletop | Solid oak, oak veneer on a specified core, or another construction? Confirm actual thickness, edge build-up and underside. | Section/detail drawing, underside photos and a labelled material sample. |
| Timber and finish | Name the wood species, grade, colour system and finish. Ask for the drying/moisture-control method for the destination climate. | Dated moisture readings with method and sampling points, plus an approved finish sample. |
| Base and connectors | Leg spacing, knee clearance, fixing pattern, removable parts and provision for tabletop movement. | Dimensioned base/underside drawing, joint close-ups and assembly instructions. |
| Chair structure | Frame species, joints, bracing, backrest fixing, level feet and intended residential use. | Unfinished frame photos, joint details and applicable strength/stability evidence for the actual model. |
| Seat upholstery | Seat-board construction, foam density and firmness, fabric composition, colour/lot and cleaning. | Seat cross-section, physical fabric sample and relevant reports for any claimed performance. |
| Table and chair fit | Check six-seat layout, seat width/depth, seat-to-underside clearance and access to end seats. | A drawing showing table supports and all six chairs with actual dimensions. |
| Packing | Separate top/base cartons; one chair per carton in this exercise. Specify edge, abrasion and moisture protection. | Carton-by-carton dimensions, gross weight, labels and photos. Confirm pallet and stacking arrangements. |

Gross margin = (price − cost) ÷ price. Price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). A 20% markup on cost is different from a 20% gross margin. Agree a margin that matches the actual service and risk.
Use the breakdown to ask better questions. If the price changes, identify the changed material, quantity, workmanship, packing or service scope.

Practice A: 420 + 6 × 78 = US$888. Practice B: 390 + 6 × 72 + 90 packing = US$912. Practice C: 445 + 6 × 80 = US$925. Confirm the same top, frame, seat, finish and delivery scope before choosing. Deposit calculations use the purchase subtotal.
Count every carton, then price the whole shipment.
A tabletop, a base and six chairs do not share one box size. Calculate each carton group separately and request collection, destination charges and final delivery as distinct items.
Before ordering
Measure the dining area, doorways, lift and stair turns. Check the top can reach the room and that all six chairs fit the table. Confirm the importer and destination requirements with the broker.
Before dispatch
Approve the finish sample, assembly plan and carton list. Protect the tabletop faces and corners, isolate hardware, label chairs and check wood-packaging requirements with the forwarder.
In transit
Keep the invoice, packing list, transport document, insurance, arrival agent and deadlines together. Confirm any non-stackable or pallet charges in writing.
At delivery
Count the cartons, photograph packaging and inspect the top, legs, finish and chair joints. Arrange assembly and check for wobble on a level surface. Record damage and meet the applicable claim deadline.
Choose the handover point in writing.
EXW
Buyer arranges most transport and export formalities. Check loading and export-clearance responsibility before accepting.
FCA
Seller hands the goods to the nominated carrier at the named place and handles export clearance. Record the precise collection point.
DAP
Seller arranges delivery to the named destination; buyer handles import clearance/taxes and unloading.
DDP
Seller takes import-clearance/tax responsibility. Confirm the lawful importer arrangement and whether unloading/inside delivery is included.
Editable LCL teaching exercise: one top carton, one base carton and six chair cartons, eight cartons in total. Replace all sizes, weights and rates with the factory’s final packed measurements and the forwarder’s quote.

Add duty and import tax amounts. Enter 0 only when confirmed.
If the shipment is palletised, enter the final external pallet dimensions and weight instead of counting both the loaded pallet and its internal cartons. Confirm stackability; a carton arrangement is not an agreed loading plan.
Ask the destination broker whether raw-wood crates, pallets or dunnage require ISPM 15 treatment and marking. The standard concerns wood packaging; confirm furniture import requirements separately. Do not assume processed-wood packaging and raw wood have identical requirements.
Total CBM = sum of each group’s length × width × height × carton count ÷ 1,000,000. Gross kg = sum of kg per carton × count. W/M uses the greater of CBM, total metric tonnes and the quoted minimum. Confirm any rounding and surcharges.
Duty and VAT are separate inputs, not a universal percentage. Ask the destination broker to confirm classification, customs value, tax base and payable amounts. Final-delivery charges must specify unloading and access.
